#54-Geologic and Environmental Dynamics of the Pontchartrain Basin
(2009) [FitzGerald & Reed]
-Lake Pontchartrain is a brackish estuary located in southeastern Louisiana. It is the second-largest saltwater lake in the United States, after the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and the largest lake in the state of Louisiana. This area is monitored frequently by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the environmental effects of shoreline erosion, loss of wetlands, pollution from urbans areas and agriculture, saltwater intrusion from artificial waterways, dredging, basin subsidence and faulting, storms, and sea-level rise. This JCR Special Issue focuses on the unique geologic and environmental dynamics of the Pontchartrain Basin. Dr. Duncan M. FitzGerald, coastal expert at Boston University, served as one of the principal editors for this Special Issue.
